Microbiome Signatures identifies and validates condition-specific microbiome shifts and interventions to accelerate clinical translation. Our multidisciplinary team supports clinicians, researchers, and innovators in turning microbiome science into actionable medicine.
Karen Pendergrass is a microbiome researcher specializing in microbiome-targeted interventions (MBTIs). She systematically analyzes scientific literature to identify microbial patterns, develop hypotheses, and validate interventions. As the founder of the Microbiome Signatures Database, she bridges microbiome research with clinical practice. In 2012, based on her own investigative research, she became the first documented case of FMT for Celiac Disease—four years before the first published case study.
About Us
At Microbiome Signatures, our goal is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge microbiome research and actionable clinical insights. We believe in empowering clinicians, researchers, and individuals with accessible, evidence-based information to better understand the microbiome’s role in health and disease. By compiling and validating microbiome signatures for a wide range of conditions, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of how targeted interventions can transform health outcomes.
Our database is a dynamic resource designed to translate complex research into practical tools and insights. Through rigorous validation processes, including the identification of Major Microbial Associations (MMAs) and linking them to Microbiome-Targeted Interventions (MBTIs), we are advancing microbiome science while offering clarity and actionable solutions to clinicians navigating this rapidly evolving field.
Our Story
Microbiome Signatures was born from the need to make microbiome science both approachable and actionable. While research in this field has grown exponentially, its clinical applications remain limited due to the complexity of interpreting and validating data. Recognizing this challenge, we created Microbiome Signatures to simplify the science, deliver evidence-based insights, and help clinicians address the root causes of disease—not just the symptoms.
With a foundation built on scientific rigor, thoughtful data organization, and collaboration, we bridge the gap between researchers, clinicians, and the broader scientific community. Together, we strive to advance microbiome science and bring its benefits to clinical care.
Our Mission
However unorthodox or out-of-the-box, our mission is to create a database that is so simple, compelling, and intuitive that clinicians will actually use it.
Why do we Exist?
In today’s information age, the decades-long “bench to bedside” gap in translating research into clinical practice is unacceptable, perpetuating unnecessary suffering for millions. At Microbiome Signatures, we reject this delay. By connecting the dots across disciplines, we are committed to accelerating progress, delivering actionable tools, and uncovering strategies to address root causes—not just symptoms.
North Star Principles
Innovation Without Boundaries: We will pursue every scientific rabbit hole, no matter how unconventional, in search of solutions.
Practical Relevance: Every tool, insight, and resource we build is designed to provide actionable value to clinicians.
Evidence at the Core: Our unwavering commitment to scientific rigor ensures that only validated, meaningful data reaches healthcare professionals.
Future Directions
While the Microbiome Signatures Database currently serves as a resource to connect microbial dysbiosis with chronic conditions, we’re setting our sights on the future. We aim to integrate advanced machine learning models that can predict conditions based on an individual’s microbiome signature. These predictive tools could provide clinicians with patient-specific insights and personalized intervention guides—all without requiring additional bloodwork.
Our ultimate goal? To pave the way for non-invasive, microbiome-based diagnostics and treatments, closing the 30-50 year gap projected for microbiome research to become fully integrated into mainstream medicine.
A Note from the Creator
Microbiome Signatures is deeply rooted in my personal journey of overcoming health challenges through the transformative power of microbiome research. This experience fueled my passion and urgency for turning scientific discovery into practical, real-world solutions that clinicians and patients can trust. While the spotlight will always remain on the work itself, my belief in the potential of microbiome science to revolutionize healthcare drives every aspect of this project. Microbiome Signatures is more than a database—it’s a commitment to advancing a new era of healthcare centered on root causes, personalization, and prevention.
Best,
Karen Pendergrass
Major Microbial Associations (MMAs) are fundamental in understanding disease-microbiome interactions and play a crucial role in advancing microbiome-targeted interventions aimed at treating or preventing diseases through microbial modulation.
Microbiome Targeted Interventions (MBTIs) are cutting-edge treatments that utilize information from Microbiome Signatures to modulate the microbiome, revolutionizing medicine with unparalleled precision and impact.
